Biometric Residence Permit

If you wanna stick around the UK for more than six months, you’ll need a residence permit. Basically, it’s your golden ticket—lets you live, work, use public services, all that jazz. Down the line, you might even get to call the place home for good.

Now, the EEA biometric residence card (you might’ve heard it called the UK residence card) is toast—no more being handed out. If you’re from the EU and still fancy hanging around after Brexit, you’ve gotta jump through a few new hoops, like getting settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme. No shortcuts, sorry.

Let’s talk about the EU Settlement Scheme for a sec. This thing was set up to help EU folks stay in the UK after all the Brexit drama. The main deadline to apply? June 30, 2021. Missed it? Eh, there’s a tiny bit of wiggle room—if you’re from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein, and you (or a family member) were already living in the UK by December 31, 2020, you might still be in luck. But you gotta have a solid reason for missing the boat, or fit some special criteria for a later deadline.

If you try to get settled status but haven’t hit five years in the UK yet, you’ll end up with pre-settled status instead. That lets you stay for five years, which—hey, not bad. You can disappear for up to two years without losing it, but heads up: you won’t be able to upgrade to settled status if you’re gone that long. Gotta actually be around. To keep that pre-settled status, you’ll need to prove where you’ve been and that you still fit the rules.

This all covers EEA citizens, their families, people with fancy rights to reside (like Zambrano stuff), and anyone who started living in the UK on December 31, 2020, but isn’t quite “settled” yet. Yeah, the rules are a maze. Welcome to bureaucracy, UK-style.
